How long will my Carnivorous plants take to sprout?
  • Your Carnivorous seeds can take up to eight weeks to sprout.
  • For Pitcher plant seeds and seed pack#2 in the Carnivorous Creations, the seeds need to be cooled for six to eight weeks to germinate then can take an additional eight weeks to sprout.

Hide

What is the process for sprouting carnivorous seed?
  • First, mix water and planting mixture in planting base, and smooth out the top.
  • Sprinkle seeds on top of the soil.
  • For Carnivorous Creations’ seed pack #2 and Pitcher plant seeds, place in refrigerator for eight weeks; water once every three weeks. Remove after eight weeks and thoroughly saturate the soil.
  • Snap lid on and place in window, preferably with an eastern exposure.
  • Seeds will germinate in about eight weeks.

Hide

How often do I have to water my Carnivorous Creations?
  • When the plants that are in the refrigerator are cooling, you will want to add a cup of distilled water every three to four weeks.
  • When you remove them from the refrigerator, saturate the soil thoroughly, (it should be very wet to the touch) and snap the lid on.

Hide

When do I feed my Carnivorous Creations?
  • Your Carnivorous plants will not need to eat flies until they are two or three years old.

Hide

How do I feed my Carnivorous Creations?
  • You can also feed them tiny bits of cooked hamburger or steak; be sure they are tiny, as large pieces can kill the trap itself.
  • You can also feed them a weak solution of houseplant fertilizer in the spring and summer.

Hide

I have put my seeds in the refrigerator for eight weeks and see no sprouts. What should I do?
  • Make sure they are thoroughly saturated and the lid is on. Wait another six to eight weeks and you should see sprouts.
  • If you see no sprouts call 1-800-306-4168 or email service@dunecraft.com with the following information: Name, Kit purchased, where purchased, Lot#, QC#, Address, Phone, email address

Hide

Why do I have to use rainwater or distilled water to water my Carnivorous kit?
  • The minerals found in ordinary tap water are harmful to your carnivorous plants. These minerals are typically not found in the peat bogs they naturally grow in and instead are obtained through insects they capture.

Hide

How do I form streams with the Swamp Rocks?
  • The streams that you form with the Swamp Rocks are decorative in nature. No actual water is produced from them.
  • Decide where you would like to have streams and make depressions in the soil.
  • Fill in with blue gravel.
  • You may want to wait until your seeds have germinated to place your streams for maximum effect.

Hide

I see mold forming in the terrarium. What should I do?
  • You can manually remove it with a cotton swab.
  • Water the surface of the soil with a 1:50 mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide. If mold starts to appear, reduce the moisture and water the plants with a mixture of one capful of hydrogen peroxide to seven ounces of water. This will kill the mold but not the plant.

Hide

I think I'm missing seed pack #2 in my Carnivorous Creations kit. What should I do?
  • Our Carnivorous seed pack contains both seed pack #1 and #2. Before you contact us try checking your seed pack to see if you had both seed packs. If not call 1-800-306-4168 or email service@dunecraft.com with the following information: Name, Kit purchased, where purchased, Lot#, QC#, Address, Phone, email address

Glass Terrariums

The soil for my glass terrarium is too big to fit into the terrarium. What should I do?
  • You have most likely received a larger disk in your kit. What you would need to do is put the disk in a separate container and add 2 cups of water.
  • After hydrating your disk, you would only need to put as much soil as needed into the terrarium. You will have more left over.

Hide

How do I plant the seeds in my glass terrarium?
  • Using a Popsicle stick or a spoon, you can spread the seeds throughout the terrarium.

Hide

Culinary Dome and other Herb Growing Kits

  • Use only about 1/5 of the seed packets at a time so the herbs have plenty of room to grow and you can have multiple harvests.
  • Be sure to water your terrarium every day or two, as your fast-growing herbs need plenty of water.
  • Keep your Terrarium on a windowsill with an eastern exposure if possible.

Space Sand

What is the best way to display and use Space Sand?
  • Space Sand looks the best when displayed in a glass bowl. Use a spoon to demonstrate its water- repelling properties. Do not use your hands as the oil on them will reduce the properties of space sand.
  • Be sure the bowl has no soap residue in it prior to pouring the Space Sand in it.

Hide

My Space Sand stopped working. What happened?
  • The reaction that makes Space Sand not get wet can be reversed with dish soap, alcohol, or oils. If there is any soap residue in the container, it will slowly reverse the reaction over time.
  • If too many people put their hands in the sand, the oil from their hands will eventually reverse the reaction of the sand.
  • You can purchase more sand from our website.

Hide

How do I reuse Space Sand?
  • Carefully pour off excess water.
  • Let the sand dry out.

Hide

How do I clean up Space Sand?
  • Carefully pour off excess water.
  • Let the sand dry out and sweep up.

Hide

Is Space Sand safe and non-toxic?
  • Yes, Space Sand is safe and non-toxic. Email service@dunecraft.com for an MSDS.

  • To reuse, simply add water and stir. Warm water will work faster.

Hide

How do I clean up Super Snow?
  • If it is used outdoors, you can simply hose it into the grass. It is harmless to the environment and actually will help you grass retain water for drought periods, resulting in better growth.
  • If it is used indoors, it can be allowed to dry and swept up and thrown out.

Hide

I made the Super Snow and I have slush. What should I do?
  • Mix for another minute or two. Super Snow needs to be mixed to allow the air into the mixture so it can “fluff up” and shine and sparkle, just like real snow.
  • If adding more water doesn’t work, you may have to allow the water to evaporate.

Hide

Is Super Snow safe and non-toxic? Can we put a link to an MSDS form here?
  • Yes, Super Snow is safe and non-toxic. We have done CE testing and it is safe, even if your child happens to eat some of it. Email service@dunecraft.com for a MSDS.

Hide

How can I make Super Snow more quickly?
  • If you use warm water the reaction will happen more quickly.
  • Stir the polymer and water together briskly.

Hide

I want to cover a large area with Super Snow. How can I figure out how much I need?
  • You can visit the Snow detail page or the “Resources” page to use our Snow Calculator. Simply enter the length, width, and depth of the area you would like to cover and the Snow calculator will tell you what you need.

Hide

Is Super Snow cold?
  • Yes, Super Snow is cold. A slight reaction occurs when you are making Super Snow that actually makes it slightly colder than room temperature.

Hide

Can I make snowballs with Super Snow?
  • Yes. They will even hold their shape through flight if you throw them gently.

Hide

How do I make and spread large amounts of Super Snow?
  • It is best to make larger amounts at once in a large bucket or wheelbarrow and use a plastic shovel to spread it out.
  • Use warm water to speed the reaction.

Hide

Can Super Snow be used indoors?
  • Yes, Super Snow can be used indoors. However, it is a wet material, so we would advise to spread it out on top of a plastic sheet, or use in a bowl for decoration.
  • Do not spread directly on wood surfaces.
  • It is not advisable to plan to walk on Super Snow at events, as it is slippery.

Germination Disk Questions

What is the brown puck thing in my kit?
  • We use compressed peat disks instead of bagged soil. Adding water will cause the disk to expand into planting mixture.

Hide

What is the best way to prepare the planting mixture?
  • Add warm water based the instructions on the paper insert included with the disk(s). If not included, follow the planting instructions.
  • The germination disks should take anywhere from 5-20 minutes to fully hydrate depending on its size. The warmer the water, the faster the disk will hydrate.
  • Use a spoon or your hand to press soil down into the terrarium.
  • Plant the seeds.

Hide

The soil for my glass terrarium is too big to fit into the terrarium. What should I do?
  • You have most likely received a larger disk in your kit. What you would need to do is put the disk in a separate container and add 2 cups of water.

LED light cube Questions

My lid for my light cube doesn’t fit. What should I do?
  • To put the light on your light cube you will need to tilt the light so that the long side of the light and the top of the terrarium meet and press down.

Hide

How do I put the light on my light cube?
  • The lid for the light cube is actually the clear plastic rectangular piece.
  • You could have the kit upside down and will need to flip it.
  • The soil should go into the brown terracotta base with the clear lid on top (the two large openings should meet). The top of the lid should be the side with the two small holes and the LED light should sit on top of that.
  • If you already hydrated the disks and planted the seeds, you will need to switch it around by doing the following: Take the base off of the lid. Let the soil dry out enough so that it can come away from the sides of the lid and flip the lid carefully and tap on the sides of the lid to get the soil to come out. Carefully place germination mixture into the base.

Hide

General Questions

What should I do if I over-water my plants?
  • You can remove the lid and let the soil dry out naturally, a process that will take a few days to a week.
  • If you are careful not to disturb the plants, you can tilt the terrarium while pressing down on the soil and empty out the excess soil.

Hide

My plants are yellow and browning at the tips. What should I do?
  • Trim them back and fertilize them.

Hide

How should I fertilize my garden?
  • Fertilize your terrarium in the spring and summer with a liquid soluble houseplant food.
  • Alternatively, you can also add time release houseplant fertilizer pellets.

Hide

How should I trim my plants?
  • It is important that you use a sharp pair of scissors to minimize trauma to the plant.
  • Trim plant right above a set of leaves one to two inches above the planting mixture.
  • Water plant well, replace top, and place in direct sunlight. Now the plant will branch out.

Hide

What kind of light does my terrarium need?
  • Your terrarium can grow under grow lights, which can be purchased from our website.
  • Your terrarium will also thrive on a windowsill or on a table next to a window. An eastern or southern exposure is best. A northern exposure will not provide enough light and a western exposure may burn out the plants in the terrarium.

Hide

How do I transplant plants from my terrarium?
  • Prepare the container you will be transplanting into first. Moisten the soil and dig a hole about 2 inches in diameter.
  • Make sure the soil is moist in the planter with the plant you wish to transplant. Use a spoon to try to dig out a small root ball of soil about an inch in diameter to minimize the root disturbance.
  • Place in the pre-dug hole and backfill with soil. Press gently down to eliminate any air pockets.
  • Water thoroughly.

Hide

Do you have any tips for decorating my garden?
  • Wait until after the seeds have germinated and start growing before adding the decorative gravel, sea shells, sand, etc.
  • Ornamental plastic figures, decals, and large stones should be placed in the garden at the time the seeds are planted.

Hide

What should I do if I see mold forming?
  • You can manually remove it with a cotton swab.
  • Water the surface of the soil with a 1:50 mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide. If mold starts to appear, reduce the moisture and water the plants with a mixture of one capful of hydrogen peroxide to seven ounces of water. This will kill the mold but not the plant.
